Dear ,

I’m Sofia Owen, the Staff Attorney and Director of Environmental Justice Legal Services (EJLS) at ACE. I’m sure you know that ACE has been defending the rights of Roxbury residents against environmental injustice since 1992. One of our key tools has always been strategic use of the law. EJLS anchors ACE’s organizational and coalition work with a robust legal framework grounded in federal and state civil rights law and environmental law.

Right now, we’re looking for new members of our Environmental Justice Legal Services Advisory Board. This role entails about an hour or two per quarter. It’s not a fiduciary role, but asks members to use their legal expertise to help ACE take a deeper look at our legal strategy and vet potential cases.

In this moment, environmental injustice is really visible everywhere: COVID-19 is killing Black and Brown people at higher rates than whites. Pre-existing conditions like diabetes and heart disease are much more common for people of color. And a history of polluted air and water helps explain why. That’s in addition to displacement, development, and transit systems that are skewed along racial lines too.

Joining ACE’s Environmental Justice Legal Services Advisory Board is a way folks with legal expertise can really help us fight against injustice -- without a huge time commitment. We’re seeking lawyers with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. If you might be interested, let’s find a time to chat about it! Schedule a call with me today. (Or email me at sofia@ace-ej.org anytime.)

Thank you.
